New Orleans is home to many fantastical legends, one in particular being vampires. The CASQUETTE GIRLS were sent here in the 1700’s to be wives for the men that colonized the area. The men immediately found these women unnaturally pale, so much so that their skin blistered badly and reddened within seconds of exposure to the subtropical sunlight. They carried suitcases that were almost as big as they were that were supposed to only contain their worldly possessions. Why would these orphaned women need such large suitcases for a few petticoats? Nevertheless, the Ursuline Convent took the girls in and cared for them before their arranged marriages. However, when word of the arranged marriages not quite working out, King Louis IV ordered that the girls be sent back to France. In preparation for their return to France, the young women’s possessions were brought up to the third floor of the Ursuline convent for storage. The third floor was always sealed off and the windows shuttered, so theoretically nothing should have happened to their luggage, right? Imagine the nuns’ surprise when the luggage was found empty. Despite their best efforts, none of the items were ever recovered. In fear of the supernatural, the nuns made sure nothing and no one would ever enter or exit that space again.
What do you believe? Were these pale girls the vampires themselves or did they carry the real vampires to the city in their suitcases? Do you believe any of it? Regardless of what you believe, if you ever walk past the Ursuline Convent on Chartres and the shutters are swinging in the warm breeze in the dead of summer, we recommend a scarf.

JARS & SIZING:
For over five years, Novel Nola has been dedicated to recycling every piece of glass we can get our hands on. Our glass storage facility has become overgrown as we’ve welcomed countless locals to drop off their glass, reusable packaging, and materials, fostering a community committed to sustainability.
For this reason, we have decided to update our inventory to exclusively use upcycled vessels for our candles. These jars are donated to us by our local community and hand-cleaned by us!
Please note: Aside from our 10oz Black Jar - Listing photos are just an example of products and sizes. Jar shapes, sizes, colors, etc. will vary. Not all jars may have lids. Every jar will be selected at random in the size range you choose. If you have a certain color in mind or would like a lid, please let us know in the notes at checkout, and we will do our best to accommodate. Every candle is unique and handmade with love.
With each order you place with Novel, you are helping us give back to our beloved community.
